The sense of smell, a fundamental, subtle and powerful sense, remains underestimated in training programmes for public safety and emergency services professionals.
However, it plays a crucial role in field operations, particularly when it comes to responding to olfactory stimuli that can profoundly disrupt the psychological state and tactical abilities of responders.
Uncertainty in the olfactory perception of the situation experienced during an intervention, as well as exposure to certain fumes and odours, surprises the sensory system, with resulting consequences for communication, decision-making and the ability to act.

Because odours are aggressive to the senses, they affect performance and can overwhelm the body, mind and psyche for long periods of time. The more repetitive the exposure to a specific odour, the more effective its conditioning is in identifying it in cases of uncertainty. This is why olfactory awareness is used by the armed forces, law enforcement agencies and emergency services to simulate environments and threats corresponding to a given scenario.
This form of simulation engages all the senses, while the immersive olfactory experience creates reassuring memory and sensory cues – or anchors – that can be triggered by participants when confronted with foul or unsettling odours in real-life situations.
ITOS simulation kits come in the form of five sprays or an automatic diffusion system (up to three odours) designed to improve the realism and effectiveness of training environments and to familiarise field operators physically and mentally with the recognition of relevant odours and scents.

Upon request, we can develop additional scents or scents tailored to a specific environment.
The automatic diffusion system allows you to diffuse three different scents individually or simultaneously and includes refill bottles and a smartphone equipped with a dedicated app.

Tactical and sensory resilience is a component of individual and collective safety in sensitive, tense or potentially dangerous situations. A powerful training tool, olfactory simulation helps overcome the surprise and shock associated with a sudden change in balance. It induces professional and instinctive action while limiting the impact and psychological consequences, the risk of involuntary reactions and the occurrence of a “tunnel effect”.
